What is World Refugee Day?
World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength, resilience and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilize political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but also thrive.
This year, we are putting a special spotlight on the power of inclusion.
The shared experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we can only succeed if we face the challenge together. This year we are calling for a greater inclusion of refugees in national health services, education system and sports.
Together we heal, we learn and shine!
Together we can achieve anything!
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ) is a humanitarian and non-political organization of the United Nations created in 1950, during the aftermath of the Second World War, to help millions of Europeans who had fled or lost their homes. Today, 70 years later, UNHCR works in over 135 countries around the world to safeguard the rights and well-being of people who have been forced to flee. UNHCR’s activities are based on a framework of international refugee law and standards that includes the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol, as well as an array of international and regional treaties on human rights and humanitarian law.
